Logan

Logan stood on the sidewalk without answering right away. The evening breeze tugged at the collar of is worn flannel as he studied Scott with the same flat, unreasonable stare he'd worn inside the bar. His expression gave away almost nothing. Almost. "You talk too much," Logan finally said but it wasn't said with real irritation but observation. His eyes drifted to Scott's car, and then back to Scott himself. "You know, most folk try selling me a job with money," he told Scott and the paused for a moment. "You used kids," he said as he shoved his hands into his jacket pockets, shoulders rolling once as if loosening muscles that never really relaxed. "Cheap trick," Logan added as Scott opened his mouth and admitted that he knew. Logan sighed through his nose. "It worked though," he added as Scott blinked and went on to ask if that was a yes. "No," Logan said firmly and in his rough voice. Scott's face fell as Logan continued his thought. "It's a not yet," he added as he stepped closer, stopping just outside the passenger door. "I have questions," Logan told Scott as he tilted his head slightly. "First one," Logan started. "You said people disappear. How many?" he asked as Scott answered immediately by saying twenty-three confirmed disappearances and another eleven, they're investigating. "How long?" Logan asked as Scott told him three weeks. "Anybody ever come back?" he asked as Scott's smile vanished as he said no. Logan nodded once and then paused for a minute or two. "Second," Logan finally said. "You said this thing's alive," he started as Scott frowned and said it was Hank's theory. "I didn't ask whose," Logan said as he shook his head in a little bit of annoyance. Scott hesitated and then finally said yes. "Why?" Logan asked with one eyebrow raised. Scott then looked down and told Logan that it didn't repeat itself. Logan waited for Scott to continue with his explanation. Scott cleared his throat and continued by saying it changes patterns, locations, and who it takes. Scott went on to say it was like it was almost learning. It was then that Logan's jaw tightened just a fraction.
"Third. Anyone smell anything?" Logan asked as Scott stared at Logan for a moment before asking what. "When they disappear," Logan said letting the annoyance come out in his voice a little more than he meant too. Scott started to say something but then stopped as he actually had to think about what Logan was asking. Finally, he said that one witness mentioned ozone, and another said wet earth. Scott paused for a moment as he then went on to say that one kid kept saying there was this really sweet smell, almost like flowers. Logan was already shaking his head. "No," Logan said as Scott blinked and repeated no in a question. It was then that Logan's voice had gone quieter. "I'm talking about decay," he finally told Scott. Scott could feel his stomach drop as he asked Logan if he knew that smell. "I know things that hide it," Logan admitted. It was then that silence settled between them and for the first time since they'd met, Scott saw something change behind Logan's eyes, which was recognition, not certainty but enough. Scott then asked if Logan had seen something like this. Logan didn't immediately answer. Instead, he looked down the street, his senses stretching farther than any normal person's could. Engines, conversations, and heartbeats. And in the distance, the rumble of trains. It was nothing unusual, which bothered him more than if he'd heard screaming. "A couple of times," Logan finally told Scott. Scott straightened as he asked what was it. "It goes by different names," Logan said as his expression darkened. "And it goes to different places, but it's the same feeling," he said as he looked back at Scott. "People vanish. There are no bodies or tracks. Sometimes the folk left behind," Logan said and then paused. "Forget someone was even there," Logan finally said as Scott's face drained of its color. "Hank mentioned memory," Logan said as Scott looked at him with a surprised look and told Logan that he didn't tell him that. "I know," Logan said as he then leaned against the roof of the car. "I've hunted enough things to know one rule. And that rule is that if something leaves no trail it's because it doesn't want one," he said as he looked at Scott. Scott swallowed hard as he said so this is real. "I didn't say that," Logan said as he reached into his pocket, pulled out a cigar, and then looked at it for a second before putting it back instead of lighting it. "I said I've seen enough impossible things to stop using the word," he reminded Scott. Scott let out a slow breath as Logan looked at him. "You got evidence?" Logan finally asked which Scott nodded quickly as he told Logan that they had videos, thermal scans, quantum readings and witness statements. "I want to see all of it," Logan said. Scott said that he will as Logan once more raised a eyebrow. "Hank and Janet there?" he asked and Scott said yes to both. "Good," Logan said with a grunt. Scott couldn't quite believe where this was going. Logan opened the passenger door himself. "If those two are worried, then this ain't just your imagination," Logan told Scott as he climbed into the seat. It was then that Scott broke into an exhausted grin as he asked if Logan was in. Logan settled back, one arm resting on the window. "I'm in until I know what we're hunting," he told Scott as he looked across to Scott. "And if this turns out to be some government experiment, I'm going to be real disappointed," he said as a faint, humorless smile crossed his face. Scott laughed despite himself. Scott then got into the driver's side of the car and as he settled into the seat, he told Logan that he could live with disappointing him. "You probably will," Logan told him without hesitation. Scott then started the car and soon they were pulling away from the curb. It was then that Logan's eyes drifted toward the darkening skyline and knew that something was wrong. He couldn't smell or hear it. And he couldn't track it and yet somehow, he knew something real bad was coming. And that was exactly what made every instinct he had told him this hunt was going to be unlike any he'd ever survived. Logan and Scott didn't talk much as Scott was driving them. Logan kept his eyes out for anything that would give them a clue as to what they were dealing with, but he knew that was almost impossible to find.

Logan sat there pretending to listen to everything that Scott had to say, even though he actually did here everything that Scott had said. He really wasn't sure about this guy or what he was even talking about. He put his cigar inside his mouth and started puffing it before exhaling. But Logan did know one thing and that was he could have a lot of fun with this guy, especially since his name was on the lame side. "So, the uncle doesn't mind the suit huh?" he asked and then chuckled as he sat there playing with his cigar once more. Finally, Logan stopped playing with his cigar and got very serious now. "And what makes you think I'm really listening now, Ant-Man?" he asked sounding almost annoyed and yet sarcastic at the same time. There was another awkward silence as both men just sat there, one looking at his now full glass of beer and the other one, just still there looking around trying not to piss off Logan. Finally, Logan let out a huge and frustrating sigh as he said damn it to himself. Then he broke the silence as he began to speak to Scott, now letting him know that he did, in fact, hear everything that Scott had just told him. "Look kid, I appreciate you thinking of me as a monster who can't be killed, but I'm a man just like any other, I just have different abilities as most men. So, yes, I can be killed, I just choose to stay alive," he told Scott and then went on speaking.
"And as for all that Quantum Realm stuff," he started. "Sounds like you are more in need of a scientist instead of someone like me," he said as he picked up his glass and began to drink his beer. "Or maybe the Ghostbusters, they deal with shit like that," Logan chuckled after he sat his beer down and looked back at Scott. "Besides, what makes you think I can do any good?" he asked Scott. Logan then took another long drink of his beer and then slammed the glass down, almost breaking it as he went on with his thoughts to Scott. "I can't fight something that isn't there and as for these people who are supposedly disappearing, are you sure they just aren't packing up and moving to get away from other nut jobs?" he asked not necessarily meaning Scott, but in his mind, he knew that Scott was one of those nut jobs, or so he thought. Then Logan went quiet again before getting up, threw some money on the bar and then left Scott where he sat. But once Logan got to the door he stopped and cussed silently to himself as he turned to Scott. "Are you coming? I still have questions," he asked him as he waited for Scott.

Everybody knew the Dyne family and the fact that they are one of the richest in town. They had everything they could ever dream of and yet they still wanted more, except for Hope Dyne. She wanted something different other than material things. She wanted action, adventure mixed with a bit of passion and romance. And none of the guys she's used to dating or even had been set up with fit was she was looking for. Most of them were rich snobs who just wanted her as a trophy wife, and the rest, well they were lacking in just about every department there was a man could fail in.
So bord at staying at home, and not much in the mood to entertain, Hope decided to go to town. Hope went up to her room and got herself ready by changing her clothes and doing her hair and makeup. And once she was satisfied with the way she looked, she grabbed her purse, cell phone and car keys and then headed into town. Once she got into town and before she went to the mall to hang out with some friends, she decided to grab a bit to eat. As she drove around town looking for something to eat, she spotted a restaurant that looked pretty good. So, she pulled into the parking lot and after parking her car, she got out and went in and that's when she saw him. She pushed her sunglasses on top of her head so she could get a better view and what she saw, she was loving.

Logan puffed on his cigar and then blew out the smoke. Then he took a couple of drinks of his beer. And even though he didn't look right away at Scott or even answer him, he did listen to everything that he had to say. Finally, after about 10 minutes or so, Logan turned his head up and at first all Logan did was grunt at him. But Logan let out a gruff type of sigh as he began to speak to him. "I don't care if you sit there," he told Scott as he took another drag off his cigar. Then he knocked the ashes off onto the floor. Logan went silent again as he just sat there playing with his beer a little bit before finally getting around to talking to Scott. "Ant-man huh?" he asked Scott. "Never heard of you, but I'll be sure to call if ants ever start attacking me," he smirked as he chuckled mostly too himself. Then Logan got serious and began to speak to Scott in a more mature and yet still very rough voice.
"So, my name came up huh?" he asked, though he knew everything that Scott had said, Logan did ignore half of the conversation. "So, who recommended me?" he asked in a curious but still having that rough attitude in his voice. He was all for saving the world, it was his job after all, but he just wasn't crazy about helping superheroes that annoyed him or that he didn't even like, which Ant-man was a little of both. But if it had to do with the fate of the world, then he would push his feelings aside and do the right thing. So, Logan took a big drink of her beer and then got really serious this time. "Okay, before I commit to anything, I need to know what exactly is going on, how long it's been going on and who started it," he said. "The second thing I'm going to need to know is am I the only one you need or do you need the rest of the X-Men group as well?" he asked him. |
